S.L.M. is a small, family owned company, located in Prestbury, Near Cheltenham in England.

We draw on over 30 years experience of injection moulding and tool making.

INJECTION MOULD TOOLS.
We manufacture our mould tools in-house to a standard that has proven itself over the years. We provide mould tools that are not ‘over engineered’ for the task required, producing a hardened heated/cooled, hot runner mould tool to produce small batches is not necessary or cost effective.

We manufacture our mould tools using traditional tool making machinery and skills, using specialist subcontractors when necessary.

Mould tools are made from specially selected steel stock for ease of machining and good surface finish.

Our mould tools are not usually hardened in any way, however they have proven to be very durable and capable of very high production runs if handled with care. This care determines that we therefore only produce mould tools for use on our premises.

Multi impression mould tools can be produced if required.

We do have certain size restrictions which will be advised as necessary.

INJECTION MOULDING PRODUCTION
We have 10 moulding machines of various capacities up to 150 tonnes lock. Most of our moulding production uses state-of-the-art microprocessor controlled moulding machinery with full ancillary back-up.

Injection moulding is generally viewed as a very high volume process, at S.L.M. it is possible for us to produce what would be considered low volume runs, we can cost effectively set a moulding machine for less than 1000 shots, although we can cope with any quantity.

We regulary produce batch sizes from as few as 500 shots to 25,000+ shots with no problem.

Machine size can be selected as determined by the component.

STANDARD PRODUCTS

Moulded plastic boxes & enclosures

Over the years we have been working with most of the European manufactures of model radio control hardware (the actual radio control gear) and other electronic based industries including medical monitoring equipment and telecommunications equipment for the emergency services, this has led us to produce a wide range of plastic injection moulded enclosures some of which we can offer as a standard range.

Boxes and enclosures are moulded in prime grade high impact ABS, the properties of which are suitable for easy second operations like punching or drilling, and punch tools can easily be produced in-house.

ABS is also available in a flame retardant (self extinguishing) grade and most boxes can be made in this material at a little extra cost.

Colouring of material is also possible and again is subject to an additional charge.

Sizes range from "half a matchbox" to "a large paperback book"!

Various designs are available, glue or screw together, miniature instrument style cases with easily customised "drop in" end panels & bulkhead mounting are all available from stock.

Sub Miniature Connector system

We have a range of sub miniature connectors that were originally produced for the model radio control market these have found there way in to many aspects of industry and are available in 2 3, 4 & 5 way for ‘flying lead’ use. Also available are a range of block connectors (some reversible) for PCB mounting.

All connectors pins are made from solid brass brass on the premises using Swiss sliding head automatic lathes. Pins are inserted singly, by hand, into pre moulded components it is therefore possible to produce any variation required from the standard range.

All connectors are gold plated for good electrical characteristics.

The mouldings can be produced in different colours as required.

Joystick Controls

Again an ex model radio control product that has gained and extra market from industry notably computers. We can offer one type of single axis control and three types of dual axis joystick, (one of which holds a world-wide patent).

All our joysticks are fitted with potentiometers, usually 5k lin, other value pots can be specified by the customer if volume allows.

Units vary in design and concept, however none are suitable for arcade computer games.

Servo motor/gear box combinations

U.K. manufacture of servos for model radio control ceased due to imports from Japan and the far east. We were one of the leading producers of servos in this country and although servo production has stopped we still have all the tooling available to produce plastic or metal geared servos.

At this point in time we are unsure of the supply of suitable small dc motors, but if a supply could be found production could resume.

In recent years our servos have been used in many aspects of industry, with many going to control theatre lighting.

Self tapping screws

A spin-off from our moulded products is that we hold a very large stock of self tapping screws, particularly the smaller sizes.

We have Nº2 and Nº4 self tapping screws in most lengths and head styles, all are plated for rust protection some have chemical black finish.

If you require a self tapping screw that is not in our standard stock we can usually get them to order in just a few days.

Summary

If you have a requirement for a new moulded product or require help with a new project that might require some injection moulded parts or indeed you wish to have further information on our standard products please do not hesitate to contact us. We can help with the design of your product to suit the injection moulding process and will give on-the-spot advise regarding cost.
